Matt C

Accounting firm owner, husband and father of five

From snapping at bedtime to a pause that keeps him calm and present with his five kids.

Where he was

Matt described himself as “lost in a full and busy life.” His mind ran like 50 browser tabs, all open at once. “I would walk through the door and feel overwhelmed before anyone even said hello.” Bedtime and mornings followed the same pattern: “We’re good until Dad hits level 10.” The voice in his head was harsh. “I can’t even be a cartoon dad.”

The moment he decided

Together we worked out that his kids’ energy wasn’t the problem. The front door was. He was walking straight from a full work day into the loudest room of his life with nothing in between.

What we built

A small ritual and a phone rule for the moment he walks in. Social media off his phone completely: “super helpful, I love it.” Curiosity instead of reaction with his older son, asking “why” before escalating. Tracking small wins instead of replaying what he missed. Later, at work, the 80 percent rule: if a teammate gets it to 85 percent, the last 15 is rarely worth taking back.

It feels like the curtains have been opened on this different way of experiencing my children.

What changed

In the middle of tax season, with snow outside and the whole family sick, Matt noticed something new and texted me about it the same day. “In my brain, things calm down. There’s sort of a break in the chaos for a second, and it’s like, oh, okay, you can think and not just be emotional.” Over Christmas he sat down to play board games with his son and leaned into every question instead of rushing past them. He called it “kind of a revelatory experience.”

The deeper shift

Matt named the lie that had been driving him: “You’re swimming under this current of, like, not achieving enough.” He saw that he was the bottleneck in his own firm and started handing new clients straight to his team instead of pulling the work back to himself.

What’s next

His principle for the year is permission to be okay with progress instead of upset about missing perfection.

You’re not trying to escape responsibility. You’re trying to carry it well.
